Luxembourg’s main child benefit is the allocation pour l’avenir des enfants, paid by the Caisse pour l’avenir des enfants (CAE). It is a monthly family allowance rather than a tax credit, so it arrives as a transfer and does not depend on a parent having enough income tax to absorb a deduction. The 2026 figures changed during the year because Luxembourg indexed the benefit from 1 June 2026. Since that date, the basic monthly amount is 315.04 euros per child, with higher totals once the child is over 6 or over 12.

That makes the allowance one of the first figures to put into a household budget for a move to Luxembourg. It sits outside gross salary, but it changes the cash available each month for rent, childcare, food and school costs. This guide sets out the current CAE amounts, the annual value by age, the August school-start payment, the payment calendar, and the points that matter for cross-border families.

The 2026 monthly amounts after indexation

The CAE states that the current indexed amount applies from 1 June 2026 at index 992.24. The base is the same for every child, then an age supplement is added:

Child’s ageMonthly amount from 1 June 2026Annual value at that rate
0 to 5315.04 euros3,780.48 euros
6 to 11338.85 euros4,066.20 euros
12 and over374.48 euros4,493.76 euros

The age supplements are 23.81 euros a month from age 6 and 59.44 euros a month from age 12. A child turning 6 does not need a new household budget from scratch, but the increase is still worth 285.72 euros a year. The move from the younger-child amount to the 12-plus amount is worth 713.28 euros a year compared with the base rate.

The benefit is indexed, so these rates can move again if another wage-indexation tranche is triggered. That is why older articles using 299.86 euros as the base amount are now stale for late 2026 planning. The correct figure to use after the June adjustment is 315.04 euros.

Worked examples for household budgets

For one child aged 4, the monthly family allowance is 315.04 euros. Across a full year at the current rate, that is 3,780.48 euros. If the household is comparing rent in Luxembourg City with a lower-cost commune, this is a fixed cash inflow that should be added after pay is converted from gross to net.

For two children aged 8 and 13, the monthly total is 338.85 plus 374.48, or 713.33 euros. Across twelve months the total is 8,559.96 euros, before the annual back-to-school allowance. The same family’s earned income should still be checked separately with the Luxembourg salary calculator, because social contributions and income tax do not work like the family benefit.

For three children aged 3, 7 and 15, the monthly total is 315.04 plus 338.85 plus 374.48, or 1,028.37 euros. That is 12,340.44 euros a year at the post-June 2026 rates. When a family is comparing Luxembourg with a neighbouring country, the salary comparison tool can show the tax and price side, while this allowance figure fills in part of the family-specific cash flow that a single-worker calculator cannot know.

How long the allowance is paid

The general rule is straightforward: the allowance runs from the month of birth until age 18. It stops from the month after the child reaches 18 unless the young adult continues in secondary or equivalent education. The continuation rule matters because the 12-plus rate can apply well past the 18th birthday where the education condition is met.

Families should separate that from higher-education funding. The CAE page on the family allowance describes secondary or equivalent education, not a blank cheque for every adult child. When a child is close to 18, check the CAE procedure in advance so paperwork does not lag behind the birthday month. A missed continuation step can interrupt payment even when the underlying condition is still met.

The August back-to-school allowance

Luxembourg also pays an annual back-to-school allowance in August. The CAE lists two amounts: 115 euros for children over 6 and 235 euros for children over 12. No application is needed when the child already receives the monthly family allowance. A child under 6 who has entered the second cycle of basic education can also qualify if a school certificate is presented.

The school payment is separate from the monthly allowance. A child aged 8 therefore receives 338.85 euros a month after the June 2026 indexation, and in August the school-start amount adds 115 euros. A child aged 13 receives 374.48 euros a month, and the August top-up is 235 euros. For a two-child household aged 8 and 13, the back-to-school payment adds 350 euros in August on top of the ordinary monthly total.

Payment timing in 2026

CAE transfers monthly child benefit near the end of each month. The 2026 calendar lists payment dates from 23 January through 18 December, with most transfers falling between the 22nd and 25th of the month. For the rest of 2026, the published dates are 25 September, 23 October, 25 November and 18 December. CAE notes that the money can appear the same day, the next day, or the day after that when the receiving bank is outside Luxembourg.

That timing is useful for cash-flow planning. Rent may leave a household account at the start of the month, while child benefit tends to arrive near the end. If you are building a monthly budget, enter the allowance as end-of-month income rather than assuming it covers the first bills of the same month. The budget 50/30/20 calculator can help separate fixed commitments from spending that can wait until the benefit has arrived.

Cross-border families and differential supplements

Luxembourg’s labour market includes many parents who work in the Grand Duchy but live in Belgium, France or Germany. Their family-benefit position can be more complex because EU social-security coordination decides which country pays first and whether Luxembourg owes a differential supplement. The payment calendar also treats those supplements differently: CAE says the first half-year differential supplement is paid at the end of July, and the second half-year amount is paid at the end of January of the following year.

The practical point is to avoid mixing the monthly resident-payment rhythm with the half-yearly supplement rhythm. A Luxembourg-resident household receiving the ordinary family allowance may see money every month. A cross-border household entitled only to a differential amount may see a larger but less frequent payment. That distinction can matter more than the headline annual entitlement when bills are monthly.

How it fits with pay, tax and TVA

The family allowance does not reduce a salary, and it is not the same as a tax bracket. Calculate net employment income first, then add the household’s benefit stream. For a parent on a Luxembourg salary, the income tax calculator shows the tax part of the payslip, and the Luxembourg take-home pay guide explains the social contributions and employment fund surcharge behind the net figure.

On the spending side, VAT still affects what the allowance buys. Luxembourg’s 17 percent standard TVA rate is low by EU standards, but school supplies, clothes, food, childcare-adjacent costs and transport can fall into different bands or outside normal consumer categories. The Luxembourg VAT guide is a useful companion when you want to understand why two purchases with similar sticker prices carry different tax treatment.

FAQ

How much is Luxembourg family allowance in 2026?

From 1 June 2026 the monthly amount is 315.04 euros for a child aged 0 to 5, 338.85 euros for a child aged 6 to 11, and 374.48 euros from age 12. The figures include the CAE age supplements.

Did the amount change during 2026?

Yes. CAE updated the indexed amount from 1 June 2026 at index 992.24. That is why late-2026 calculations should use 315.04 euros as the base, not the older 299.86 euro amount.

Is the allowance means tested?

The ordinary monthly family allowance is not presented as an income-tested payment. Entitlement depends on the child and social-security conditions, and cross-border cases can involve coordination with benefits paid by the country of residence.

When does the family allowance stop?

It normally runs until the child reaches 18. It can continue after 18 when the young adult pursues secondary or equivalent education, but the continuation should be checked with CAE before the birthday month passes.

How much is the back-to-school allowance?

The annual August payment is 115 euros for children over 6 and 235 euros for children over 12. It is paid automatically when the child already receives the family allowance.

When are payments made?

Monthly child benefit is transferred near month end. CAE’s 2026 schedule lists, for example, 25 September, 23 October, 25 November and 18 December for the last four payments of the year.
