This calculator works it out from two things you already know after a run, the distance you went and the time it took, and shows the answer four ways at once: pace per kilometre, pace per mile, speed in kilometres per hour and speed in miles per hour. Enter the distance, choose whether it was in kilometres or miles, type the hours, minutes and seconds, and read the result straight off. Pace and speed are the same fact seen from two angles. Pace asks how long one unit of distance takes, so a smaller pace number means a faster runner, which trips people up at first because for almost everything else bigger means more. Speed asks how much distance you cover in an hour, so a bigger number is faster, the way a car speedometer reads. A 5:00 per kilometre pace is the same effort as 12 kilometres per hour, just counted the other way. The per-kilometre and per-mile figures are tied together by the length of a mile, which is 1.609 kilometres, so the per-mile pace is always about 1.6 times the per-kilometre pace: 5:00 per kilometre is about 8:03 per mile. That conversion matters because a treadmill, a track and a race route may each be marked in a different unit, and a goal time set in one needs translating to the other. Runners reach for pace in three main ways. The first is checking a finished run: you ran 10 kilometres in 50 minutes, so your pace was 5:00 per kilometre and your speed 12 kilometres per hour. The second is pacing a target race: a sub-25-minute 5 kilometre means holding 5:00 per kilometre or faster from the start, and knowing that lets you set a watch or treadmill and not set off too hard. The third is comparing efforts on different distances, since pace strips out how far you went and leaves a clean measure of how fast you were moving. A useful habit is to train at a mix of paces rather than one: easy runs slower than race pace to build endurance, and shorter intervals faster than race pace to build speed, with the calculator turning each target into a number you can hold. Remember that real-world pace drifts with hills, heat, wind and tiredness, so an even split on paper rarely matches the watch metre for metre; aim for an even effort and let the pace settle around the average.

The time is first turned into total seconds and the distance into kilometres. Dividing the seconds by the kilometres gives the pace per kilometre in seconds, shown as minutes and seconds. Multiplying that by 1.609344, the exact kilometres in a mile, gives the pace per mile. Speed is the inverse relationship: the distance divided by the time in hours gives kilometres per hour, and dividing that by 1.609344 gives miles per hour.

Worked example
A 10 kilometre run finished in 50 minutes exactly: the pace is 50 minutes over 10 kilometres, which is 5:00 per kilometre. In miles that is about 8:03 per mile, and as a speed it is 12 kilometres per hour or roughly 7.46 miles per hour. Hold that pace for 21.1 kilometres and you finish a half marathon in about 1 hour 45 minutes.

How do I turn a per-kilometre pace into a per-mile pace?+
Multiply the per-kilometre pace by 1.609, the number of kilometres in a mile. So 5:00 per kilometre is about 8:03 per mile, and 4:00 per kilometre is about 6:26 per mile. The calculator does this for you, but the rough rule of "add a bit over half again" is handy on the move.
What pace do I need for a specific finish time?+
Divide your target time by the race distance. A 25-minute 5 kilometre is 25 over 5, which is 5:00 per kilometre. A 4-hour marathon is 240 minutes over 42.195 kilometres, about 5:41 per kilometre. Enter your goal distance and time here and the pace to hold comes straight out.
Why is my real pace uneven even when I try to run steady?+
Hills, wind, heat, bends and fatigue all change how fast a fixed effort carries you, so the pace on a watch wobbles even when the effort feels constant. Most runners slow over a long race as tiredness builds. Aim for an even effort rather than a metre-perfect even pace, and judge the run by its average.
Is a faster pace always the goal?+
No. Good training mixes paces on purpose. Easy runs are meant to be slower than race pace to build endurance without strain, and interval sessions are faster than race pace to build speed. Running everything at one hard pace is a common way to stall or pick up an injury, so the right pace depends on the session.
