Ireland Child benefit calculator
Estimate Child Benefit (Sochar Linbh) in Ireland for 2025. Child Benefit is a universal monthly payment from the Department of Social Protection for qualified children. It is not means-tested, so your income does not affect the amount. This shows the annual total with the monthly figure in the breakdown.
| Qualified children | €2.00 |
| Per child, per month | €140.00 |
| Child Benefit per month | €280.00 |
How it works
- The standard rate is 140 per month for each qualified child. The annual total is that monthly amount multiplied by 12.
- A qualified child is one under 16 who lives with you, or aged 16 or 17 (up to their 18th birthday) if in full-time education, on an approved training course, or with a disability.
- Multiple births are paid more, but only for the children of that birth: twins are paid at one-and-a-half times the rate (210 each), and triplets or more are paid at double the rate (280 each) while at least three remain qualified. Any other children you have are still paid the standard 140. Enter how many of your children come from the multiple birth so the uplift is applied only to them.
- A one-off New Baby Grant of 280 is paid with the first month of Child Benefit for a child born or adopted on or after 1 December 2024. It is not part of the recurring amount shown here.
Worked example
A family with 2 qualified children, both under 16, in 2025 is paid 140 per child each month, so 280 per month, which is 3,360 over the full year.
Frequently asked questions
Is Child Benefit means-tested in Ireland?+
No. It is a universal payment with no income test and no PRSI condition, so the amount depends only on the number and ages of your qualified children.
How much is paid for twins or triplets?+
Twins are paid at one-and-a-half times the standard rate, which is 210 each per month. Triplets or more from one birth are paid at double the rate, 280 each per month, for as long as at least three children remain qualified.
Until what age is Child Benefit paid?+
It is paid for every qualified child under 16. It continues to age 18 if the child is in full-time education, on an approved training course such as Youthreach, or has a disability.
What is the New Baby Grant?+
It is a one-off payment of 280 made with the first month of Child Benefit for a child born or adopted on or after 1 December 2024. It is separate from the recurring monthly payment and is not included in the annual total here.

- Universal payment; no means test. 2025 standard rate of 140 per child per month.
- Assumes every child entered is a qualified child for the full year. Part-year claims, children turning 18, and changes in qualification are not modelled.
- The multiple-birth uplift applies only to the children from that birth (enter the count in "Children from a multiple birth"), and only while at least three children (triplets or more) or both twins remain qualified. Any siblings outside the multiple birth are paid the standard rate. The one-off New Baby Grant is excluded from the annual total.
